Neighborhood

Eating Out? Two miles away, in Laurelville, there are 6 family owned restaurants. The State Parks & Nature Preserves nearby are: Rockhouse, Conkles Hollow, Tar Hollow, Cantwell Cliffs, Ash Cave, Old Man’s cave.

Laurelville is a small town on the western end of the Hocking Hills. It is mostly comprised of nice farmers and kind hearted hill people. The closest larger towns are Logan, Circleville, and Chillicothe.

Ravens Retreat is a 2 mile drive up off Thompson Ridge East from Laurelville. A 25 to 35 min scenic walk on the heavily wooded two lane road, if you feel like you would like to walk to town. Laurelville has several businesses. Those being the Hocking Hills Visitor Center, Laurelville Fruit Company , Salt Creek Valley Bank ( AKA Vinton County Bank), Youngs Family Market, Sunoco Gas Station, Family Dollar, Whites Hardware Store, A Grain Mill, Car Wash, USPS Post Office, and 6 restaurants. Those 6 restaurants are The Ridge Inn, The Village Café, Old Town Diner, L & J’s Ice Cream & Pizza, Mam’s Rusted Skillet, and Laurelville Pizza. We are particularly fond of Laurelville Pizza due to the delicious vegan/plant based pizza they make upon request. Doug and Tiffany, the husband and wife combo that run Laurelville Pizza, make delicious food. We order our pizza with, or without, vegan cheese. If you have interest in the vegan cheese, we recommend calling a week ahead to give them a chance to make sure its stocked.

If you are up for checking out some local art while away from Ravens Retreat, check out The Jack Pine Studio located 6 miles/10 min drive from the property. This studio focuses on glass work and is well known for intricate glasswork and live demos.

If for some reason you are meeting a group of people in the Hocking Hills, Laurelville has a nice playground and shelter house near the family Dollar.

If you only have one day to visit a Hocking Hills State Park, check out Conkles Hollow located 11 miles/18 min drive away. If you have more time, check out Rock House located 6.5 miles/11 min away.

Access

Guests have access to hiking all of our 58 acres, and all the land around The Pollinator site.

Friendly reminder, we do not allow fishing, swimming, or hunting on the property.

While you are here, we want you to feel completely welcomed and free to explore around the property while doing your best to leave the smallest footprint possible. The Whippoorwill birds here lay eggs on the ground without a nest so please watch your steps on the ground. We would like for you to stick to traveling on trails when at all possible.

Space

Raven’s Retreat is a Vacation Rental Attraction, located in the Hocking Hills, where we focus on the well being of our guests. People that stay at Raven’s Retreat are often here to be immersed in Nature and visit the nearby Hocking Hills State Parks. While here guests experience Seclusion, Peace, Tranquility and an Escape from Everyday Life. All of our dwellings and spaces are inspired by Nature, Art, and overall Systemic Health. Raven’s Retreat is run by an Athletic Couple whom has turned their focus from competing in various combat sports, to Lifestyle Wellness Education. This Education includes the pursuit of Mental Health through fostering Creativity and Self Expression, as well as, Nutrition, and Physical Fitness.

The Pollinator is our first tiny home created for an upscale Glamping experience overlooking the water of a Private Pond on 58 acres. Sculptdecor has created this Glamping space, with the intention of it being used for some much needed vacation time immersed in nature.

Our Spatio, AKA our Spa Centered Patio, includes our Jacuzzi therapeutic 8 person Hottub, 4 person Cedar Sauna, & a plumbed Outdoor Shower with hot water. This outdoor shower may not be available after several days of sub zero temperatures. The Spatio is less than 200 meters away from Pollinator Tiny Home, guests can reach this area by walking past the pond and continuing on the same private driveway. Guests will soon see a gravel path on the LEFT; that path leads to the spatio. This area is located on the backside of our largest rental that sleeps 20 people named Klad House, NOT OPEN YET. The EV charger, J1772 Tesla, is located near the spatio. It is said to charge all types of electric vehicles at a rate of up to 44 miles per hour. Guests can use this EV charger for free.

There’s a private outhouse, adjacent to the Pollinator, which is exclusively dedicated to guests staying in the Pollinator. One side of the outhouse contains a porta-john and the other half is an outdoor shower/changing area. We provide a camp shower if you would like to use it within the changing/shower station.

The Pollinator has beautiful hardwood kitchen counters and is stocked with a fridge, freezer, gravity fed sink, double ceramic burner, French door convection oven, and steel pans.

Our stocked coffee/tea station includes a kettle, pour over vessel, a manual coffee grinder and various teas.
The queen size bed is very comfortable, we were careful to select a bed we would want to sleep on ourselves.

There is an air conditioner available and electric heaters within the glamp site, to maintain a comfortable temperature for all seasons.
The decorative tiling, for the wood stove backdrop, is designed to represent fungal species that grow on our property.
Three of the four walls are abundant with windows allowing guests to connect with the outdoors, however, they still have the option to close the curtains for privacy or to darken the space. Leaving the curtains open, you can look at the stars, at night, from the comfort of the indoors. The Windows are screened to bring in the Appalachian air while keeping the insects out.

The Pollinator gets its name because it sits next to a sassafras tree that has a honey bee hive within it. This hive is viewable out of a large window on the south side of the Pollinator. These honey bees are NOT aggressive but we always respect their space.

The elevated balcony, on the back side of the Pollinator, overlooks the pond and leads down to the stone firepit made of rocks from our valley.

Near the fire pit is a charcoal smoker grill for all you grill masters out there.

Raven’s Retreat is a beautiful, 58 acre property located in the Hocking Hills, 2 miles east of Laurelville, Oh. With 2 separate 1/2 mile long driveways, one to access the top of the ridge and one to go down in the valley, this land has remained mostly untouched. It was purchased due to its resemblance to the deep woods of West Virginia, home to Raven’s mother, Lisa Mahaney. The property is dear to us and we do everything we can to protect and maintain it in its natural state. It contains 4 creeks, hiking trails, a pond, and the top of a ridge. There are several endangered species including whippoorwills and two lined salamanders that reside at Raven’s Retreat. There is an abundance of wildlife present due to keeping this property as wild as possible. While no hunting or fishing is allowed, wildlife viewing stations have been setup for guests to observe the creatures. Birdwatching is abundant here, and we are working with local environmental specialists to ensure that we create a thriving, healthy place for the birds.

We do our best to keep the human traffic on the property low but we want people to feel free to explore our challenging trails. There are about 2 miles of Hiking trails on the property that are not heavily traveled. The elevation change from the top of our ridge to the deepest part of our creek bed is over 220ft. If you plan to hike our trails, please keep strong scents such as perfumes to a minimum. This is often overlooked, but it can be confusing and disturb the wildlife. We greatly respect our water, and have natural springs here on the property. More important to us is that our guests have a quality experience rather than flooding the woods with a lot of people.

If you want to venture out, there are also many famous parks with hiking trails in the area, such as Rock House, Conkle’s Hollow, and many other Hocking Hills State Parks.

Quiet hours are from 8p.m. to 8a.m. A respectful noise level is to be kept in consideration for our neighbors and nocturnal animals. Please note, we do consider the effects of light pollution and use particular lights to lessen our impact on the night creatures.

Please do not bring your animals with you to the Pollinator. We love animals but in the past, domestic animals such as dogs have attacked our wildlife more than once so we ask that they do not come with you.

Our space is for all peaceful people and we recommend the mentality of, “we’re here together, so let’s learn to live well together.”
We have been Vegan Health Coaches for years are known for introducing people to plant derived foods, so don’t be surprised if we leave something for you to try inside The Pollinator.

Currently we are creating a 2400 square foot pollinator garden near our largest rental in an attempt to increase biodiversity. We have many projects involving art and nature, you may see a few of them while you are here.

When it comes to art, The Sculptdecor Shop is on the property, approximately 400 meters from The Pollinator glamp site. Sculptdecor was started and is still lead by Dustin/Dj Weatherby. Dj is a master level sculptor, he specializes in custom animatronics and sculptures made from metal, wood, fiberglass, recycled materials, pumpkin, ice, and mixed media. Dj has countless projects in the works, if you see him in the shop while hiking around, feel free say hello.

Hope you will love our space as much as we do!

Your hosts,

Raven and Dustin/DJ.

Transit

Ravens Retreat is in the Hocking Hills a little under 2 miles up a heavily wooded two lane road called Thompson Ridge Rd, just East of Laurelville Ohio. About a quarter mile down our driveway are two parking spots on the left side designated for Pollinator guests. Parking is always free.

Notes

There are an abundance of insects of the property, including the honey bee hive within the tree near The Pollinator. We do not have an abundance of mosqitoes due to our healthy dragonfly population here on the property.

If you have an allergy to bees, please be prepared in the event that you may come in contact with them. These bees have not shown any aggression, but it is wise to be prepared. If there is an issue with bees, we advise you visit during the cooler months because they will be a lot less active.
