Building a Healing Space in Nature

From Forest To sanctuary: A pictorial story of raven's retreat

Creating our art retreat center together

Building a Healing Space in Nature

Hosts, Dustin and Raven, made almost everything in the spaces from local fallen trees, recycled materials, and second-hand materials such as the tile used in the bathrooms. This made creating the spaces on the preserve take much longer but it allowed them align their building practices with sustainability on the nature preserve.

Raven’s Retreat was intended to be a special place to experience inspiration, self-worth, and connection.

Building a healing space in nature is no easy feat, but these spaces often include natural light, water features, textured plants, and quiet seating to facilitate calm and reflection. By borrowing these elements-tree‑shaded seating nooks, the melody of a trickling stream, a gently winding footpath-you transform a retreat area into an immersive sanctuary.

Whether you’re a retreat host or a visitor, blending these evidence-based features supports restorative experiences and lasting wellness benefits, deeply aligning with Raven’s Retreat’s mission of holistic creative renewal.

We know you will feel that while you are here for your getaway retreat.

Nestled in the forest in Hocking Hills, Ohio, Raven’s Retreat offers a prime example of an evidence-based healing environment.

Surrounded by native woodlands, flowing creeks, and filtered sunlight through the canopy, this natural setting aligns perfectly with research-backed principles of restorative design.

Studies show that environments featuring natural light, soothing water elements, and gentle sensory stimulation, known as positive distraction, can significantly enhance cognitive function and emotional well-being .

The immersive experience of forest bathing, listening to birdsong, or observing rippling streams encourages a physiological shift, lowering stress levels and improving mood [2].

At Ravens Retreat in Hocking Hills, this isn’t theory-it’s a lived reality. We deliver exactly what we promise. Whether attending a creative retreat or simply seeking peace, guests benefit from a setting intentionally crafted to harness nature’s healing power. It’s not just beautiful, it’s biologically beneficial.

How Creative Wellness Retreats Nurture Health, Focus, and Fulfilment

1. Choose a Quiet Natural Spot

Start by selecting a location with minimal noise and visual distraction, such as a forest edge, open meadow, or near a gentle waterfall. These spots naturally invite stillness and reflection. Observe the light throughout the day and notice how sounds shift-early morning bird calls, rustling leaves, or evening crickets. The location should evoke a sense of retreat from everyday busyness, offering visitors the immediate benefit of “positive distraction,” which helps the mind reset and recover from stress [1].

2. Add Calming Elements

Enhance the setting with simple additions that promote relaxation. Place a bench or natural stone seat in a shaded nook. Add soft sounds-wind chimes, a trickling fountain, or even a bowl of water for wildlife. Use natural materials-such as wood, stone, and clay-to keep the space grounded. Consider incorporating aromatherapy elements, such as dried lavender or cedar, to enhance the calming effect. These small additions serve as gentle anchors for mindfulness, helping the body and nervous system settle into stillness.

3. Cultivate Sensory Richness and Mindful Design

Design with the senses and the soul in mind. Include native plants with varied textures-soft moss, smooth bark, feathery grasses-and flowers with gentle, non-overpowering fragrance. Create slow, winding pathways to encourage wandering, not rushing. Use filtered natural light to highlight special areas while keeping other corners shaded for introspection. Balance open communal spaces with cozy nooks for solitude, so each visitor can choose the experience they need most [2].
